Earlier this month, I told you about the emerging world of social networking in virtual reality. But lurking on the sidelines of this newly active space is Facebook's own social VR behemoth known as Oculus Rooms.

This is where the strategy behind the marriage of Facebook and Oculus begins to reveal itself.

In some ways, the mobile version of Oculus Rooms is as powerful an experience as the Oculus Home app on the higher-end Oculus Rift

Currently only available for Gear VR users, Oculus Rooms first brings you to the same virtual apartment displayed when using the Oculus Rift. Then, when you're ready to launch into a social encounter with someone you've connected with on Facebook, you simply select the Party option and you're brought into a new virtual space with three distinct areas. Amazon just quietly updated one of the most important parts of the Echo in a move that is sure to delight Star Trek fans everywhere.

The company added "computer" to the list of supported wake words for its Echo devices — no doubt a reference to the powerful voice-activated computer onboard the Starship Enterprise.

It looks like Amazon has been rolling out the update slowly over the last few days, though the company hasn't said much about it beyond an update to its support page, which details how to change it via the Alexa app. Read more...

Samsung finally put the Note7 scandal to rest—here’s what it could do for their future

We may never know why Samsung’s battery manufacturing partners made a handful of critical errors that led dozens of (the once widely-praised) Galaxy Note7 smartphones to overheat, and/or burst into flames.

We also won’t know exactly why most of the 3 million Note7’s that were sold didn’t blow up or catch fire while dozens of others did. The flaws were there, but they obviously needed some other X-factor to trigger the fault.

Think of it this way: If you build two walls, and one's at full thickness and the other's paper-thin, both create a physical barrier you can’t see through. However, if you lean on the paper wall, you’re gonna break through.  Read more...

Android Pattern Lock might be vulnerable to (very determined) thieves

Https%3a%2f%2fblueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com%2fuploads%2fcard%2fimage%2f359002%2f9aa2884b-9fbe-4f81-9d5f-541582ec4266

Imagine unlocking your phone in a cafe, unaware that a hacker is secretly videotaping you

Theoretically, they could crack your Android code by analyzing your hand movements with computer vision algorithm software, according to a new study — and they don’t even need to see the screen. To be clear, the risk of this happening is very, very low. But it’s still not an encouraging study for the 40 percent of Android users who use the Pattern Lock method to unlock their phones.

Thankfully, few low-level phone thieves have access to that type of tech. Plus, they actually need to swipe your device to break into it, so this is a very unlikely security concern for most people.    Read more...

Snapchat is making a big move in this European country

Snap is getting serious about growing as a global news network.

Snapchat launched its first localized Discover channel in Norway with VG, the most widely read online newspaper in the country, the companies announced Monday.

Snapchat and Discover aren't brand-new to Norway. What's changed is that Snapchat users in the country now have access to an exclusive, localized channel.

That comes along with new content guidelines for publishers and a mobile redesign Monday, all ahead of its expected initial public offering later this year.

Why Norway? It's an area of highly active users, according to Snap. The company declined to share exact numbers in the region. Snapchat has more than 50 million daily active Snapchat users in Europe overall.  Read more...
