If you’ve watched the Handmaid’s Tale you know it’s brilliant. If you haven’t – let me summarize it for you. It’s a Hulu web series created by Bruce Miller and based on a book of the same name, written by Margaret Atwood. And the most I’m willing to say about the plot, without spoiling anything in the show for you, is that it’s set in dystopian future in which women called “Handmaids”, are forced into sexual and child-bearing servitude.
It’s pretty mind blowing if you ask me. It’s also the first web series to win a primetime Emmy for Outstanding Series, and that’s not the only Emmy it won. It was got 13 different Primetime Emmy nomination and won eight! It also got two Golden Globes, for Best Television Series – Drama and for Best Actress. My point is – it’s freaking fantastic and you have to watch it. You have about a month to catch up on the first season, and the second one will premiere at the end of April.
Now that we’re on the same page, let me tell you some interesting fact about the cast of the Handmaid’s Tale.
So everyone knows Elisabeth Moss, or Lizzie, as everyone who knows her calls her, was in Mad Men. Those who are a bit older might also remember her from the West Wing where she played the president’s daughter. But here’s something you might not know about her – Elisabeth Moss is a scientologist. She doesn’t like to talk about it, but she’s been brought up as a scientologist since early childhood and she still remains a member of this slightly strange religion.
Samira Wiley, who we all know from Orange is the new Black, and now from The Handmaid’s Tale too, turns out is also pretty serious about her religion. She mentioned in one of her interviews that she pretty much grew up in church, and her parents are Baptist pastors. But here’s another fun fact, she used to work in a bar, even while she was working on OITNB, but eventually just had to quit that job because too many people started recognizing her.
