Ellie Goulding performed at the the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving halftime show Thursday, and she certainly seems to have left an impression on viewers.
Two weeks ago, the 32-year-old “Love Me Like You Do” singer threatened to pull out of the show during the game that annually kicks off the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign to help the homeless over concerns the organization may be anti-LGBTQ.
But the show went on as planned, and fans had … thoughts, mostly about the singer’s headgear. Goulding topped a black and white ensemble with a hat that social media users declared resembled lampshade.
The white hat seemed to be modeled in a cowboy style, and had an edge rimmed with what appeared to be diamonds or rhinestones in a dripping fashion, covering her eyes.
Goulding shared her outfit on Instagram with the caption, “Dallas, baby” on Thursday.
Twitter users reacted strongly to the singer’s getup.
One user, @TellStevens, sent out a GIF of a baby walking into an oven door with a lampshade on its head with the caption: “Ellie Goulding walking off the stage.”
Another, Peter Mallett, didn’t seem to enjoy the halftime show regardless of her outfit.
“Cowboys: You can’t have a worse performance than our 1st half. Ellie Goulding: Hold my beer,” he wrote in combination with a GIF of the “America’s Got Talent” judge Simon Cowell saying “absolutely awful.”
Several users including @loloheart compared Goulding’s appearance to the “leg lamp” in “A Christmas Story.”
“#EllieGoulding in that Christmas spirit already,” they wrote.
One user even created her own version of Goulding’s “lampshade” hat and tweeted an image. Annie Harris captioned her tweet, “Channeling Ellie Goulding?”
Some criticized the originality of Goulding’s look, comparing her to Sia or even Lady Gaga.
While the singer received some blowback for her wardrobe choice during the show, she did receive some compliments through her Instagram post. One user, @michael_barbell, even wrote that he had named his daughter after the pop star.
