Sarah Falconer and Stephen Wilson set out to create a romantic wedding that didn’t scream “fairytale.” Easier said than done, when the couple met in Edinburgh, Scotland, and reside in London. But one place proved to have the unrefined beauty that they sought: Mallorca, Spain, an island in the Mediterranean between Europe and Africa. “We wanted a party in the middle of nowhere, in the heat, with natural beauty—an easy ask in Mallorca,” Sarah says, noting that she grew up with holidays to the destination.
From there, it was just about picking the best finca, the term for the restored estates on the island. Surprisingly, it was the last venue they saw that they booked: Finca Son Berga. It’s a 16th-century property surrounded by vineyards, olive trees, and the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains, with all the rustic charm that the couple desired.
Since natural beauty and the venue were the centerpieces, Sarah and Stephen did little to accent the space. Instead, they made the day more about the friends and family in attendance, then about flowers and decor. Colors were kept to natural stone hues, with the occasional pop of hot pink, and the pair skipped traditions like a wedding party and a cake. “It was a celebration, not just of us but of our families and friends,” Sarah says. “We didn’t want it to look or even feel like a wedding.”

Sarah collaborated on the look of her silk, floral-print dress with designer Olivia Deeney, an artist she describes as “talented and fearless.” She paired the look with Simone Rocha drop earrings and Gianvito Rossi blush velvet heels—her “something borrowed” from her sister.
Sarah began the wedding day with breakfast and chats with her younger sister, discussing anything and everything but the upcoming nuptials. “It felt like my life was about to completely change and to share the last morning just me and her was priceless,” she says. After, she met up with Stephen for pre-ceremony portraits.
“The old fincas off the beaten track on the island are just incredible,” Sarah says, adding they are “romantic but not in any way ‘fairytale.’” It felt authentic to the couple, who met nearly eight years prior while working at a bar together in Edinburgh.
Sarah admits one of the easiest aspects of wedding planning was the guest list. The couple did it in one go, and it stuck. They also ditched the idea of a wedding party so that “everyone could be guests.”
The ceremony space spoke for itself, so the pair did little to change it. They simply added sand-colored chairs. “We wanted to let the finca and its gardens do the talking,” Sarah says.
Sarah made her entrance with her father to “Beasts of Burden” by the Rolling Stones. Stephen donned a lightly hued linen suit made by his friend, Paul Marsden. He paired the look with Dries Van Noten shoes and light pink boutonniere.
Terraced landscaping and the Tramuntana Mountains created the natural backdrop for the “I dos.”
Since Sarah and Stephen are residents of the U.K., they had their legal marriage before the Mallorca event. That meant the island nuptials could be more celebration than ceremonial. The couple exchanged personalized vows, but also included several readings. One was a custom poem written by a friend.
After their first kiss as newlyweds, Sarah and Stephen exited to “This Must Be the Place” by the Talking Heads.
“I made a conscious effort to not get bogged down by details,” Sarah says of the planning. “A stiff, formal wedding was just not on the agenda.”
During planning, the pair focused on the logistics first, and then the creative aspects. “Get all the boring bits booked so you can enjoy the fun bits without the looming to-do list,” advises Sarah.
During cocktail hour, guests sipped Aperol Spritz “by the bucket load” and munched on Mediterranean style canapés. That, of course, featured plenty of ham and cheese.
Like the ceremony, the couple let the venue provide natural beauty, such as the stone walls, dusty palette, and scenic panorama. Festoon lighting hung above the white linen-topped tables to add both illumination and atmosphere for the alfresco dinner party. White linens and pillar candles kept the neutral palette. Sarah made the menus, which included hand-painted details and each guest’s name calligraphed at the top.
The couple’s casual vibe extended to the food as well. “We wanted a big feast with friends,” Sarah says of the menu, which included lobster salad, sirloin steak, and a chocolate pudding dessert.
To add to the festive atmosphere, Sarah and Stephen invited two DJ friends from Edinburgh to throw a full-on dance party. It was filled with plenty of Prince songs, including their first dance to his “I Wanna Be Your Lover.” In fact, the celebration was one of the couple’s highlights: “At the end of the night, looking at three generations of party animals dancing and singing, top of lungs, to Prince, word for word.”
