Purple and Magneta Outdoor Wedding in Maryland

College sweethearts Trecya and Marcus connected over a common struggle: Math.

When Trecya started a study group to help pass her math class, Marcus didn’t hesitate to join. It was the beginning of a five-year relationship that resulted in an intimate, DIY proposal. Trecya recalls, “Marcus gave me a photo album of our entire relationship together, 5 years, and he talked me through each picture and yeah memory… At the end of the photo album read the words, ‘To be Continued…’ That was when he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I mean of course, I said YES!!!”

Their beautiful summer wedding was full of new memorable moments to add to that album. They incorporated their cultures and personality into every aspect of the day. In an ode to Marcus’s love for comic books, he and his groomsmen wore superhero socks and cufflinks. And Trecya shares, “I am Trinidadian and Marcus is Salvadorian, so for my culture, we did a steel drum band that played songs both from Trinidad as well as Latin American songs during cocktail hour. And of course the food!!!! We had a mixture of Caribbean food and Salvadorian food!!”

Quick Facts

  • What gifts did you give to your bridesmaids and groomsmen:
    • Bridesmaids: The bridesmaids got pajamas with their initials monogrammed on them, they got bath products from Lush, a wine glass, a mini emergency kit, flip flops to dance around in, and I think a few more knick-knacks that I can’t remember. Marcus is obsessed with superheroes and Marvel movies in general, so his groomsmen got personalized bags with items that represented their favorite Marvel character, like a drinking glass, a key chain, a T-shirt, cuff links, that they each wore on the wedding day and a pair of socks. The Best Man also got a wine gift basket, because he is majorly into wine.
  • Gifts for one another: Marcus gave me a beautiful Tennis bracelet and I gave him a Tissot watch.
  • Ceremony entrance song: “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele
  • First dance song: A mixture of “Matrimony” by Wale; and “Latch (Acoustic)” by Sam Smith

How did you meet?

At Howard Community College in our math class, I was trying to form a study group so that I would pass, and I asked for his number. If you ask him, he will tell you he asked for mine :).

Tell us about the proposal.

We went to California for his cousin’s graduation from college. We were planning on going somewhere anyway because it was my birthday, so we decided to make a trip of going to California. We spent the first weekend in LA and then went to San Diego for the week leading up to my birthday. My parents came with us, and I did not think anything of it because we were all supposed to go on a trip anyway. On my birthday, we went to this restaurant in Gaslamp district that was AMAZING, and then that evening we went to Hotel del Coronado. His cousins met us there, those who lived in LA, and he had one that lived in San Diego. His mom and sister surprised us both from Texas which was awesome. Marcus gave me a photo album of our entire relationship together, 5 years, and he talked me through each picture and yeah memory. It was so crazy that he remembered literally everything we ever did LOL. At the end of the photo album read the words, “To be Continued…” That was when he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I mean of course I said YES!!!

Describe your wedding style.

My wedding dress was made by Galia Lahav, I think since I was a teenager I stalked this designer and I always knew they would make my wedding dress. My mom actually found a boutique in Georgetown that was having a trunk show and we went to the trunk show. I tried on about 7 dresses and immediately knew that the dress I chose was the dress I wanted. I slept on it for a month or 2 and we went back to try the dress on again, and we just easily made the decision to buy it. I know for Marcus he is not a super flashy individual so he decided to rent his suit from the Black Tux as well as the groomsmen attire.

What was the wedding shopping experience like for you?

The wedding shopping experience for me was great. I did not have a bunch of people around me when I made certain decisions. Marcus was not as available with scheduling as I was, so I did a lot of the meetings and such by myself, but he was in the loop the second I wanted to make a decision, and we were able to make decisions very quickly when we wanted something. We were on the same page the majority of the time. It was also pretty easy because I’m a shopper and when I want something I look for it for as long as I need to to make sure I find it.

Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding?

If yes, tell us more. We definitely incorporated culture into our wedding. I am Trinidadian and Marcus is Salvadorian, so for my culture, we did a steel drum band that played songs both from Trinidad as well as Latin American songs during cocktail hour. We also did a live music band to represent the Salvadorian culture, which was probably my most favorite part of our wedding listening to them play, we always talk about how we wish they would’ve stayed longer, they were great!! And of course the food!!!! We had a mixture of Caribbean food and Salvadorian food!!

What is your best memory from your wedding?

Our best or most favorite memory from our wedding was our ceremony. I think it meant the most to the both of us, and also our first dance.

What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples?

I think our biggest advice would be to not listen to the peanut gallery when making decisions or doing anything that involves planning the rest of your lives. Remember the love you have for one another and make the love you have for one another show in every aspect of your day.
