What has been the key to their lasting marriage? Alyssa shares, “We deliberately make the choice to love each other in the most unlovable moments. And we appreciate each other for it.”

  • Names: Joshua & Alyssa McMahon
  • When did you get married and where? July 11, 2009, Hartford

What was your wedding like?

Very low-budget!

As you celebrate your anniversary, what do you remember most about your wedding day?

I remember feeling hurried and rushed. We had a lot of hiccups on our wedding day that felt pretty disastrous. But there are also good memories: Josh’s parents and siblings surprised us and flash mobbed the ceremony with a very special and beautiful song that wowed the attendees. Josh has 9 siblings and they and his parents are all quality singers. It was so amazing that the song is now a family tradition and is performed for every newlywed in the fold.

Was there anything you would have done differently for your wedding?

Yes! I would have hired an experienced wedding planner.

What are your favorite things to do as a couple?

Church Ministry. We also enjoy Sudoku– it’s our “thing” we do.

Who cooks?

Alyssa, definitely. Josh can make a mean omelet, but that’s the extent of his culinary ability–he reads the box to toast frozen waffles!

Do you have any children or pets?

We have three sons and two daughters. We don’t deserve how amazing they are.

When it comes to Career, what do both of you do and how do you make time for each other?

Josh is a financial advisor. Alyssa is a “stay at home” mom with an active license to sell real estate. We have date night every night after we put the kids to bed, because no matter what we are doing, whether watching TV, folding laundry, reading an article, or playing music, we do it together.

What would you say are the most important elements for a successful marriage?

Selflessness and Gratitude.

How do you keep the spark in your marriage?

We deliberately make the choice to love each other in the most unlovable moments. And we appreciate each other for it.

Tell us about the shoot. What inspired it?

We didn’t get the photographs we really wanted on our wedding day because the location we wanted for photos was unexpectedly unavailable. It caused us to have to find a new location at the last minute and we had to rush to avoid being late to the reception. (We were late, anyway.)

What do you love most about one another?

Alyssa loves Josh’s beard and also that Josh is hard-working and can teach himself to do just about anything he wants. Josh finds Alyssa to be incredibly attractive and kind and a great mom.

What advice can you give for newlyweds?

Vows are easy to keep for better, in health, for richer. Put in the effort to have and hold for poorer, in sickness, for worse, because these things are inevitable in any marriage.
