Yamaha MT-15 is now closer to a formal launch in the Indian motorcycle market where it will compete with KTM Duke 125 and TVS Apache RTR 200. The baby MT, of course, picks design cues from larger MT series motorcycles like the recently launched 2019 MT-09. It gets similar front fascia like the big MTs with a split headlamp setup and it’ll get a fully digital instrument cluster. Most of the details about the bike are out now, especially with the photos that were leaked sometime back.
All-new MT-15 will by far be one of the sportiest looking motorcycles in the segment. It’ll be powered by the same engine that powers the YZF-R15 V3.0. The fuel injected engine puts out 19 bhp and 15 Nm of torque. The new Yamaha MT-15 gets disc brakes at the front and rear along with a dual-channel ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) as standard.
Yamaha’s MT motorcycles are largely based on their R-brand counterparts sans the fairing. Like the R15, the MT15 is based around a similar mechanical setup as the India-spec R15 with one minor change to the swing-arm. In the MT-15 the aluminium swingarm from R15 will be switched out for a box-type one. This could be to ensure that Yamaha can price it well under the R15. In comparison to the R15 riding, ergonomics are slightly more laid back on the MT so as to improve comfort.
Yamaha YZF-R15 has been a quite a well-liked motorcycle in India and with the MT-15, Yamaha could recreate the same success. It is, after all, a naked streetfighter version of the R15 and should deliver on power delivery and handling as nimble as its fully faired cousin. The price tag it will carry is likely going to be slightly smaller as well.
